- In Buddhism, nirvana is the heavenly state of nonexistence, where there is neither ambition nor desire. Once an individual reaches nirvana, they are released from the cycle of death and rebirth. In order to achieve nirvana, however, one must come to the realization that there is no soul and that they themselves are the illusion. In other words, if you believe that you exist, you will not be happy, and will not reach nirvana.
